FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Teeth Whitening
Does teeth whitening cause sensitivity?
Some clients experience temporary sensitivity, particularly within the first 24 hours. We tailor each treatment to minimise discomfort and provide aftercare guidance and products to manage sensitivity effectively.
Will teeth whitening damage my enamel?
No. Professional whitening does not damage healthy enamel when done correctly. We prioritise enamel protection, controlled processing times, and post-treatment care to support long-term oral health.
Is teeth whitening safe?
Yes, when performed professionally and correctly. All Whiteology treatments use regulated products, protective gum barriers, and are guided by trained specialists to ensure both safety and comfort.
How white will my teeth go?
Results vary based on your natural tooth structure, staining type, and history. We work within what your teeth safely allow and tailor the outcome to your preference — from subtle enhancement to bold brightness.
Is teeth whitening suitable if I’ve whitened before?
Yes. Whitening history helps guide treatment selection and processing time. Many clients return for maintenance or refinement to keep their results looking fresh.
How long do results last?
With the recommended 4–6 week top-up, results typically last 3–6 months or longer, depending on lifestyle habits such as coffee, wine, smoking, and oral care routines.
Why is the 4-6 week top-up important?
The top-up helps lock in your colour, refine your final shade, and significantly extend longevity. It’s considered an essential part of achieving a stable, long-lasting result.
How does cosmetic teeth whitening work?
Professional teeth whitening uses a peroxide-based gel to safely lift stains from the enamel. Our in-chair treatments are fully monitored and customised to your teeth, goals, and sensitivity levels to achieve controlled, even results.
Can i book with a friend?
Yes. When you book a 2-person group booking you'll get a saving of up to $80 applied to the total booking.
Group booking savings:
- Signature Treatment: $255pp - ($80 total saving)
- Ultra Treatment: $485pp ($20 total saving)
Both clients must attend the same appointment time for the saving to apply.
Terms & conditions apply.
How often should i whiten my teeth?
Once you've locked your colour in with a 4-6 week top-up, clients may return every 3–6+ months for maintenance, depending on lifestyle and desired brightness.
Is teeth whitening safe while pregnant or breastfeeding?
As a precaution, we do not recommend whitening during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
What if I have sensitive teeth?
At Whiteology, we don’t run a “one-size-fits-all” whitening session. Your treatment is customised in real time based on how your teeth respond, so you can achieve a beautiful result without pushing past your comfort threshold.
Here’s how we approach sensitive clients:
1) We start with a proper pre-treatment check
Before we begin, we assess your whitening history, current sensitivity, enamel condition, gum health, recession (if any), and lifestyle factors (like coffee habits, smoking history, or dehydration). This helps us choose the right approach from the start — not halfway through.
2) We customise processing, not just product
Sensitivity isn’t just about “strong gel vs weak gel.” It’s more often about how long the gel is active, how your teeth respond, and how we pace the session. We adjust the treatment variables to suit you, including:
- The processing time (shorter, controlled intervals if needed)
- The pacing of the session (more breaks, slower build)
- The overall structure (aiming for an even result without overloading your teeth)
3) We use protective measures as standard
We apply a gingival barrier to protect the gums and keep the experience comfortable and controlled. This also allows us to work with precision, especially for clients who are prone to irritation or sensitivity.
4) We actively monitor and tailor as we go
This is a big Whiteology difference: we don’t “set and forget.” We check in with you throughout and make adjustments based on what you’re feeling and what we’re seeing. If you’re getting sensitivity, we tailor immediately.
5) We choose the right treatment pathway for your sensitivity level
For clients who are very sensitive or want maximum results without discomfort, we’ll often recommend the Ultra Treatment (two sessions 4–7 days apart). Splitting sessions can be gentler and gives us more control — meaning you can still achieve a high-level result while keeping your teeth comfortable.
6) We guide you through aftercare to minimise sensitivity and protect results
Post-treatment sensitivity is typically temporary. We’ll give you a clear aftercare plan (including what to avoid, how to support comfort, and how to maintain results), and we’ll advise you on the best timing for your 4–6 week top-up, which is key for longevity.
If you’re worried about sensitivity, you’re in the right place, our entire process is designed to deliver results with control, comfort, and expert oversight.
What should I do before my appointment?
Brush and floss 60-minues beforehand and avoid any foods or drinks aside from water. Full preparation instructions are sent once your booking is confirmed.
What is the white diet?
The white diet is a short post-treatment guideline designed to protect your results while your enamel settles after whitening. Immediately following treatment, the enamel can be more receptive to pigments, which means dark or strongly coloured foods and drinks may re-stain the teeth more easily during this window.
For this reason, we recommend avoiding staining items such as coffee, red wine, tea, dark sauces, berries, curries, and coloured drinks for 48-72 hours. Instead, focus on lighter, low-pigment foods and clear liquids.
Following the white diet helps:
- Preserve and stabilise your final shade
- Reduce the risk of uneven re-staining
- Extend the longevity of your results
Your specialist will guide you on exact timing, and you’ll receive full aftercare instructions so you feel confident and supported once you leave your appointment.
Can I eat and drink straight after my appointment?
We recommend a 3-hour fasting period, followed by adherence to the white diet for the next few days. Full aftercare instructions are provided.
What treatment should I choose?
If you’re unsure, Specialist Choice is always a great option. This allows your specialist to assess your teeth on the day and select the most suitable treatment based on your goals, staining type, and sensitivity.
What’s the difference between Signature and Ultra?
Signature is designed for a significant result in one session.
Ultra is our most advanced option, delivered across two sessions to achieve our brightest, most even outcome, or to gently manage sensitivity while maximising results.
Will crowns, veneers, or fillings whiten?
Whitening treatments only affect natural tooth enamel, not existing crowns, veneers, or fillings.
However, professional whitening does lift surface (extrinsic) staining from natural teeth, restoring them closer to their original shade.
If staining has been present for a long time, the natural teeth may lift more noticeably than surrounding dental work. During your treatment, we monitor progress closely and adjust or stop processing to ensure your smile remains balanced and harmonious — avoiding a mismatched appearance.
For clients planning to replace or upgrade existing dental work, we recommend our Ultra Treatment. This allows your teeth to reach their brightest, most stable shade first, so any new restorations can be colour-matched to your final result.
What add-on treatments can I enjoy during my whitening appointment?
To elevate your experience and make the most of your time in-clinic, we offer a curated selection of optional add-on treatments that can be enjoyed during your whitening appointment. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Tooth Gems
Is there any aftercare?
Yes — immediate aftercare is essential for longevity. For the first 24 hours, avoid touching the gem, eating hard foods, brushing over the area, or consuming acidic drinks. After 24 hours, resume your normal routine to keep your gem and surrounding enamel looking their best.
What happens if my tooth gem comes off?
If your tooth gem comes away, this is not an emergency. Depending on how it detaches, you may or may not need to see a dentist. If adhesive or backing remains on the tooth, a dentist can safely buff it away. Complimentary replacements may be available if the gem comes away within the first 30 days, subject to assessment.
Can tooth gems be applied to veneers, crowns, or fillings?
In some cases, yes — however longevity cannot be guaranteed on veneers, crowns, or fillings. Tooth gems adhere best to natural enamel, and results on artificial surfaces may vary. Your specialist will assess suitability and placement on the day and advise whether a tooth gem is appropriate for your teeth.
Should I whiten my teeth before getting a tooth gem?
Yes. We recommend completing any teeth whitening before applying a tooth gem to ensure an even, cohesive final result.
Are tooth gems hygienic?
Yes. All applications follow strict hygiene and sanitation protocols, and maintaining good oral hygiene after the first 24 hours helps prevent plaque buildup and surrounding enamel discolouration.
Can anyone get a tooth gem?
Most people can, however suitability depends on tooth surface condition, oral health, and any existing dental work. It is the client’s responsibility to check with their dentist if they are unsure whether a tooth gem is suitable for them. Our specialist will also assess the teeth prior to application.
How are tooth gems removed?
Tooth gems are safely removed by a dentist using professional dental tools. The process is quick, gentle, and does not damage your natural tooth when removed correctly.
Does it hurt to get a tooth gem?
No. The application process is completely painless and non-invasive.
Can I eat and drink normally after getting a tooth gem?
Yes, with care. We recommend avoiding very hard or sticky foods directly on the gem, especially in the first 24 hours. Normal eating and drinking can otherwise resume.
Will brushing or flossing knock my tooth gem off?
For the first 24 hours, we recommend avoiding brushing directly over the gem to allow the adhesive to fully cure. You should brush and floss before your appointment, then pause brushing in the gem area for the first day. After 24 hours, you can return to your normal brushing and flossing routine — just avoid aggressive brushing directly over the gem. Good oral hygiene helps maintain longevity.
Are there drinks I should avoid?
Yes. For the first 24 hours, avoid highly acidic drinks, as these can weaken the adhesive while it is curing.
Are tooth gems safe?
Yes. Our tooth gems are non-invasive and enamel-safe when applied professionally. We do not drill or damage the tooth. The gem is bonded using a dental-grade adhesive similar to what’s used for orthodontic brackets.
Will a tooth gem damage my teeth?
No. When applied and removed correctly using dental-grade bonding (the same type used in orthodontics), tooth gems do not damage enamel. Our technique prioritises tooth health and long-term safety.
What type of gems do you use?
We use high-quality Swarovski crystals and premium crystal designs sourced from Sparkle by Maya, known for their durability, shine, and safe cosmetic application standards
How long do tooth gems last?
Longevity varies depending on placement, oral habits, and individual enamel composition. Many tooth gems last several months to a year or longer. In some cases, a tooth may naturally reject the bond — this can happen due to enamel variations and is not always predictable. This does not indicate damage or incorrect application.
